Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in Respiratory Care?
A: My mother passed away from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) when I was in high school. In honor of her, I wanted to become a Respiratory Therapist.
Q: What are some of the most challenging aspects of your job?
A: Patient compliance is one of the most challenging aspects of my job. Some patients may struggle to follow treatment plans or care instructions, which can hinder their recovery. Another challenging aspect is the emotional toll that the job comes with.
Q: Can you share a memorable patient experience that had a significant impact on you?
A: One experience that really stuck with me was witnessing the impact of drunk driving when I was working in the ER of a level 1 trauma center.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Respiratory Care?
A: Stay committed to lifelong learning. In order to provide the best possible care for your patients, you have to keep up with continuing education in the field.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about your role?
A: It’s subtle yet rewarding when a patient says thank you after I provide care to them. Knowing that I can help someone or save their life is worth something to me.
Q: As we celebrate Respiratory Care Week, we'd love to learn something fun about you outside your professional life. Can you share a hobby or interest that brings joy to your days when you're not coordinating care?
A: I enjoy going to NBA basketball games and NFL games. One of the top goals on my bucket list is that I want to watch an NBA game in every arena around the country.
Ed Marto — RRT

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in Respiratory Care?
A: I had Physician and Respiratory Therapist friends I played with in a softball league. They helped me get my start, and the rest was history.
Q: What are some of the most challenging aspects of your job?
A: Non-compliance of patients. Cannot save everyone. Medical trauma (MVA). Gunshot victims, suicide victims. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients.
Q: Can you share a memorable patient experience that had a significant impact on you?
A: My wife, Barb, and I worked in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) and treated patients waiting for lung transplants. Long story short, we had a CF patient who was on death's door, and after a traumatic night keeping her alive with my Nurse Practitioner friend Paul, lungs arrived that morning. We watched her walk down the aisle six years ago, and she now has a son (non-CF).
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Respiratory Care?
A: Getting into this field can be very rewarding. I’ve seen good and not-so-good RRTs in the practice. My advice is to get into the practice wanting to conquer the world. This will make you a better practitioner. Never stop learning and always ask questions.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about your role?
A: Helping to save lives.
Q: As we celebrate Respiratory Care Week, we'd love to learn something fun about you outside your professional life. Can you share a hobby or interest that brings joy to your days when you're not coordinating care?
A: My hobbies are traveling, going to great restaurants, hitting the gym, playing tennis and going to the gun range. Both my wife and I were raised with outdoor sports.
We're deeply grateful for the dedication and compassion of professionals like Josh and Ed, who work tirelessly to ensure the highest standards of respiratory support and patient care. Their commitment goes beyond expertise; it’s about the genuine care and empathy they bring to every interaction.
